Mac-welles

Orson Welles, MACBETH, Republic, 1948, **I.V.

Watched Orson Welles' Macbeth adaptation tonight. Similar use of shadow and lighting to Citizen Kane--everything is wet, grimy, windy, and eerily creepy. The cast were to use Scottish accents, which are on the whole so-so and at times a little over the top. But the backdrop is a character in this drama and a powerful & frightening one at that.

It reminds me why Welles is, for me, the genius of American cinema. [Coppola coming in a close second]. Along with Kurosawa, Orson is my all time favorite.
